10 Healthy Habits of a PROFITress

Running your own business is very different from working for someone else. For one, you need to be self-disciplined because no one is there telling you what to do every day. For another, especially if you work from home, there might be a lack of IRL colleagues that you need to impress. So, in reality, it’s really on you to establish habits that will manifest progress and positivity as the boss of a profitable business. Keep reading for 10 of our top suggestions.

Habit #1: Open Your Mail Regularly

A true PROFITress stays on top of the mail that comes in every day. She doesn’t let it pile up. Why? Because there will sometimes be important tax and financial notices that need to be handled in a timely manner. Ignoring your mail puts you at risk of missing something time-sensitive and critical to your company’s well-being and success.

Habit #2: File Important Documents

After opening her mail, a Profitress will file all important documents so she can find them again later. (Refer to our Savvy Boss Document List to learn which tax, company, and business records are file-worthy.) Although many documents are digital these days, any physical ones that come via snail mail should be kept in an organized fashion as well.

Habit #3: Stay Hydrated

It sounds basic, but you need to drink water throughout the workday! Running a business is very taxing. Staying hydrated will help keep you energized, sharp, and motivated.

Habit #4: Eat When You’re Hungry

This is another basic one, yet easy to overlook when things get busy. (You know you’ve prioritized work over food before!) Whenever you feel hunger pangs, no matter how crazed you are, take a break and go get something nutritious to eat. Taking care of yourself will enable you to stay focused and on task.

Habit #5: Avoid Procrastinating

While this can be a real challenge for some, a Profitress does her best to avoid procrastinating. She does what needs to be done, like regularly selling her product/service, even when she doesn’t necessarily feel like it. Establishing a set schedule can be helpful in combatting this tendency.

Habit #6: Respond to Emails in a Timely Manner

Like her regular mail, a Profitress stays up on opening emails too. Not only does she pay attention to what’s coming in, but she makes sure to respond promptly. Adopting this habit shows people you’re professional and on top of things, in addition to helping guarantee you don’t miss any valuable opportunities.

Habit #7: Stick to a Consistent Schedule

As we mentioned above, creating a schedule and sticking to it will help you avoid procrastinating on important tasks. Moreover, having a predictable routine typically reduces stress, improves efficiency, and holds you accountable. So, start work at the same time each day, schedule a lunch break, and maintain routines that work for you.

Habit #8: Check Your Credit Score Often

A Profitress also makes it a habit to check her personal credit score regularly. Down the line, you may need to leverage your personal credit to obtain a business loan or line of credit. Staying on top of your credit score will help you keep it where it needs to be so you can borrow when/if the need arises.

Habit #9: Get Dolled Up for Work

Especially if you work from home, it’s crucial to maintain your daily appearance. Get dressed in a nice outfit, comb your hair, brush your teeth, and maybe even put on some makeup before work each day. This will make you feel good so you move with confidence and enthusiasm throughout the day.

Habit #10: Take Zoom Calls Seriously

Another reason to primp every morning is so you’re camera-ready for any videoconferencing meetings that come up. Take them seriously – be on time and put your camera on so everyone can see your beautiful face. This is just another chance to put your professionalism front and center for everyone to see!
